Convergence problems in finite element (FE) analysis

Convergence problems in finite element (FE) analysis usually happen because of mistakes in the model. Some common reasons are:

  • Incorrect or conflicting boundary conditions and constraints.

  • Improperly defined contact conditions, which can make it hard for Abaqus to solve contact interactions.

  • Using the wrong type of elements for the analysis.

  • Entering incorrect or unrealistic material properties.

  • Modeling a system that is physically unstable.

  • Choosing an unsuitable increment size, which can affect the solver’s ability to reach a solution.
